Purpose of the Job
As the first UX Engineer solely dedicated to our design system (6DS), you will play a pivotal role in building an enterprise-level design system that elevates our products and improves team efficiency. Acting as the technical liaison between UX and Engineering, you will deliver design system components that are easy for both designers and developers to use. While all our engineers contribute to 6DS alongside their designer counterparts, this front-end engineering role will have a unique focus on seamlessly bridging the concerns of both development and design.
This is not a designer or project manager role. If you are a Senior Frontend Engineer with experience leading efforts within a Design System team, coding, documenting, and delivering components, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
– Build reusable, single-source-of-truth (SSOT), accessible UI components in React, including design tokens and code-focused Storybook documentation.
– Ensure components are built for scalability, allowing for future extensions.
– Facilitate communication and collaboration between design, development, and product management to ensure the design system meets cross-functional user needs.
– Understand the technical feasibility behind proposed component designs and accurately scope development efforts.
– Communicate component changes and updates to the wider Tech team.
– Work closely with product engineers to ensure correct implementation of SSOT components in our products.
– Contribute to design system project planning, including estimating time to build components and effort required to implement them across the platform.
– Help review incoming requests to add new components and extend existing components.
– As needed, develop prototypes and conduct user testing to gather feedback and iterate on design components and patterns.
Educational and Experience Requirements
– A portfolio or live design system showcasing:
– Your experience building and documenting SSOT UI components as a senior member of a design system team. Must demonstrate expertise in React, implementing/managing/using Storybook, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
– Your approach to building accessible UI components.
– How you have implemented design tokens and worked with Figma developer tools.
Competencies and Behaviors
– Clear expertise in front-end engineering and building SSOT design system components.
– Deep understanding of usability principles.
– Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to drive coordination across cross-functional teams.
– Strong English writing skills to facilitate clear, concise component documentation.
Our Benefits
– Full-time employees can take advantage of health coverage, paid parental leave, generous paid time-off and holidays, quarterly self-care days off, and stock options.
– We provide the equipment and support you need to work and connect with your teams, whether at home or in one of our offices.
– Our growth mindset culture is reflected in all that we do, from onboarding to numerous learning and development initiatives, including access to our LinkedIn Learning platform.
