Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join our mission-driven team and help us use innovative technology to advance the college admissions process. As a Data Scientist: Data Operations, you will report to the Director of Data Science and be responsible for building and maintaining our data analytics and research function. This includes developing internal and external-facing business intelligence products, overseeing data warehousing, and conducting analyses to support our organizational priorities and strategic initiatives. Our organization is dedicated to creating a more simple, logical, joyful, and equitable college admissions process, and we aim to expand access to low- and middle-income students through partnerships, data-driven research, and financial aid resources.
Key Responsibilities:
– Build and maintain efficient systems, processes, and workflows for data operations
– Produce and maintain ETL processes, tables, and visualizations to promote access and equity across all functional areas of Common App
– Collaborate with Technology Services, Product Strategy, and Data Analytics and Research teams to maximize the impact of our data warehouse
– Utilize imperfect data to inform decision-making and drive improvements
– Work with publicly available datasets relevant to education, such as National Center for Education Statistics, Census, College Scorecard, and more
– Fluent in data manipulation and coding with SQL and/or R
– Understand the strategic context of Common App’s role in the higher education industry
– Communicate data and research findings to non-technical audiences
– Work effectively in a collaborative and diverse environment
Requirements:
– Candidates must live in the United States
– Bachelor’s degree in quantitative social sciences discipline or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
– 4-6 years of related experience in data reporting, SQL, database architecture, ETL procedures, data analytics, data mining, data operations, and data quality, or equivalent combination of education and experience
– Experience designing and implementing data warehousing, reporting, and analytic systems
– Experience working with and validating imperfect data
– Experience with descriptive and inferential statistics
– Experience working with publicly available education datasets
– Fluent in data manipulation and coding with SQL and/or R
– Understanding of the strategic context of Common App’s role in the higher education industry
– Strong interpersonal skills and service orientation
– Proven ability to communicate data and research findings to non-technical audiences
– Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and diverse environment
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:
– Master’s or doctorate degree in a quantitative discipline and at least one year of related experience
– 2-4 years of related experience with data visualization, preferably with Tableau or R
– 2-4 years of related experience with tools such as Atlassian, Git, Databricks, AWS Sagemaker, or S3
– Fluent in data manipulation and coding with tools such as SQL, Python, Tableau, and R
– Passion for higher education
– Experience working with Agile frameworks for cross-functional, product-minded collaboration
– Ability to teach and support non-data experts in using and interpreting data
Pay Range: Target hiring salary range $95,000-99,845
