About the Role:

The HW Solutions FW team at Samsara is seeking a Senior Automotive Systems Firmware Engineer to join our newly established group. In this role, you will work on prototyping new technologies and products that seamlessly integrate with modern vehicles, focusing on enhancing vehicle diagnostics, safety, and connectivity. You will collaborate closely with product and software teams and stay at the forefront of technology, providing valuable feedback to inform hardware, product, and software decisions.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced and dynamic environment with multiple projects running concurrently. You will have ownership over your projects and be expected to support your team members. We are looking for someone who values close collaboration, prioritizes customer needs, and is driven by the direct impact of their work.

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US, except for the San Francisco Bay Area and NYC Metro Area.

Responsibilities:

– Evaluate and prototype new technologies in vehicle diagnostics, OBD-II, CAN bus systems, and ECUs on embedded systems
– Collaborate with external technology and SoC vendors to evaluate technologies and influence their roadmaps to align with Samsara’s product vision
– Work with product teams to understand their needs and align technology exploration with product requirements
– Develop solutions that seamlessly integrate with modern vehicle systems and enhance diagnostic capabilities and safety features
– Communicate and collaborate with firmware/software engineers, product managers, hardware engineers, and support teams
– Integrate security considerations into all stages of product development to ensure robust and secure solutions
– Understand and apply regulatory compliance requirements for automotive and IoT devices
– Champion and embody Samsara’s cultural principles as we scale globally and across new offices

Minimum Requirements:

– Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
– 8+ years of experience working with firmware/software teams on vehicle diagnostics, OBD-II, CAN bus systems, and ECUs on embedded systems
– Hands-on development and testing experience with the above technologies
– Experience with embedded Linux and RTOS systems relevant to vehicle technologies
– Proficient in low-level C/C++, Linux kernel development, debugging and diagnostic tools, and development workflows using CI/CD tools
– Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (e.g., CAN, LIN, FlexRay) and hardware-firmware integration
– Knowledge of vehicle diagnostic protocols such as UDS (Unified Diagnostic Services) and J1939
– Understanding of automotive cybersecurity practices, including secure boot and secure communications
– Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally

Preferred Qualifications:

– Experience with V2X communication technologies, sensor integration, perception systems, and ADAS
– Experience with end-to-end product development involving vehicle diagnostics and safety systems
– Hands-on experience with developer boards, prototyping features, running experiments, and evaluating KPIs
– Familiarity with automotive industry standards and regulations, such as ISO 26262 (functional safety) and ISO/SAE 21434 (vehicle cybersecurity)
– Self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and drive technology and product exploration
– Proficiency with automotive-grade SoCs, MCUs, and experience working with external and SoC vendors
– Experience with cloud connectivity and IoT platforms, particularly in relation to vehicle data

Compensation Philosophy:

At Samsara, we offer a competitive total compensation package that is at or above market value for eligible roles. This includes base salary, bonuses, and restricted stock unit (RSU) awards. Top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards, allowing for higher market positioning.

The range of annual base salary for full-time employees in this position is between $142,503 and $215,550 USD. Please note that base pay may vary depending on factors such as your location, relevant experience, and skills.
