Position: Senior Data Scientist, Commercial Strategy at Thumbtack

About the Data Science Team:
The Data Science team at Thumbtack partners with various departments to use data to guide business decisions. They tackle complex problems and provide insights for Thumbtack’s Commercial Strategy, Partnerships/Business Development, Sales, Support Operations, and Trust and Safety teams. The team is made up of intellectually curious individuals who are dedicated to improving Thumbtack and each other.

Role:
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will collaborate with product and operations leaders to shape the strategy for the Commercial Strategy team. This team plays a crucial role in shaping our business strategy and works with various departments, including Refunds, Incentives, Category Management, Partnerships, Communications/PR, and Commercial Strategy. In this role, you will conduct in-depth quantitative analyses, design and implement experiments to measure the impact of new projects and features, and make recommendations based on data-driven insights. You will also be responsible for maintaining data infrastructure, identifying key drivers of business outcomes, and contributing to the data culture at Thumbtack.

Responsibilities:
– Partner with leaders of Thumbtack’s Commercial Strategy team to conduct in-depth quantitative analyses that guide strategic decisions
– Design and implement A/B tests, Market Based tests, and other experiments to measure the impact of projects and new features
– Make recommendations based on detailed analysis and a deep understanding of our business
– Build and maintain reports, models, metrics, and visualizations to provide insight into users’ experiences and business performance
– Maintain SQL queries and Looker/Tableau dashboards that support analysis and reporting
– Identify key drivers of core business outcomes through statistical techniques
– Contribute to the team and company data culture through collaboration, training, and coaching
– Partner with Data Engineering, Marketing, Internal Tools, and Product teams on cross-functional projects
– Be involved in scoping, prioritization, and execution of tasks related to new company initiatives and programs

Qualifications:
– BA/BS degree in Economics, Statistics, Math, or Computer Science (or equivalent experience)
– 3+ years of experience in analytics, data science, or economics
– Passion for using data to drive business impact in an operational environment
– Strong written and verbal communication skills
– Strong experience using SQL and data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Looker)
– Familiarity with statistics/programming languages (e.g., R, Python)
– Ability to detect and debug data anomalies and work with business leaders to drive improvements
– Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams

Bonus Qualifications:
– Master’s degree in Applied Economics, Statistics, Data Science, or related fields
– Familiarity with operational business lanes such as Business Development, Sales, Support, or Business Operations
– Working knowledge of Looker and LookML

Location: Thumbtack is a virtual-first company, and this role is open to candidates living in approved locations across the United States, Canada, or the Philippines. For candidates living in San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle metros, the expected salary range is $140,250.00 – $181,500.00. For candidates living in all other US locations, the expected salary range is $119,212.50 – $154,275.00.
