The Role:
We are seeking a Senior or Principal level Database Engineer to join our Database Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for the architecture, tooling, maintenance, and performance optimizations of our production database systems built on Postgres technology. Our Database Engineering team manages all of the AWS RDS infrastructure that powers our loans. You will lead the development of tools and processes for software engineers to improve data models and support our data quality initiatives. This role offers the opportunity to work with a wide range of technologies and have a significant impact on our evolving data workflows.
Key Responsibilities:
– Own the architecture, tooling, maintenance, and performance optimizations of our production database systems built on Postgres technology.
– Lead the development of tools and processes for software engineers to improve data models and support data quality initiatives.
– Optimize SQL queries and techniques for improving data workflows.
– Implement data governance initiatives in the application layer, such as quality, privacy, and retention.
– Utilize knowledge of Postgres extensions and performance optimization techniques.
– Guide design discussions using knowledge of Postgres scalability solutions.
– Demonstrate a strong understanding of fundamental AWS building blocks, such as EC2, EBS, S3, RDS, IAM, and VPC.
– Comfortably work in high-security and high-compliance environments, such as finance or healthcare.
– Utilize technical skills in scripting, SQL, and Unix command line tools.
– Mentor and collaborate with Software Engineers on Data Modeling best practices.
Qualifications:
– 8+ years of experience in a Senior Database Engineer/DBA role using Postgres, with some experience using AWS RDS.
– Advanced knowledge of data modeling techniques for RDMS.
– Strong experience optimizing SQL queries and improving data workflows.
– Experience implementing data governance initiatives in the application layer.
– Knowledge of Postgres extensions and performance optimization techniques.
– Familiarity with Postgres scalability solutions.
– Knowledge of fundamental AWS building blocks.
– Comfortable working in high-security and high-compliance environments.
– Relevant technical skills, including scripting, SQL, and Unix command line tools.
– Experience mentoring and collaborating with Software Engineers on Data Modeling best practices.

Salary Range:
The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be between $186,100 and $257,500 USD, depending on geographic location. Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location, and individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
