Job Title: Engineering Manager – Feature Engineering

The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects, is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to join our Feature Engineering department. Reporting to Nat Baca, the Director of Engineering for Reading Experiences, you will work with a team to improve the user experience for the readers and contributors of Wikimedia sites. This role requires a technical background in fullstack web development, experience with building user-facing web applications and services, and a track record of success in working with multicultural, distributed teams.

Responsibilities:

– Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to plan and prioritize work, taking into account project goals, technical requirements, and team skillsets.

– Drive project execution, ensuring that work is on track, key performance metrics are met, and any roadblocks are actively addressed.

– Communicate regularly with stakeholders to provide updates on progress, risks, and outcomes.

– Foster an engaged and productive team culture, coaching and developing engineers to support their growth and career goals.

– Manage risk and succession planning for projects and implement best practices for software development.

– Conduct interviews, hire new team members, and provide onboarding and mentorship to ensure their success and engagement.

– Participate in strategic direction-setting for the team and allocate resources accordingly.

Requirements:

– 3-5 years of experience as an engineering manager or equivalent experience.

– Technical expertise in fullstack web development.

– Experience with building user-facing web applications and services.

– Proven success in working with multicultural, distributed teams.

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

– Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.

– Familiarity with open source development methodologies and communities.

– Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills.

– Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.

Qualities:

– Experience with remote work and building a functional and healthy geographically distributed team.

– Familiarity with large-scale, global developer ecosystems and platforms.

– Alignment with the Wikimedia Foundation’s mission and values.

– Resilience and a willingness to work on new and challenging problems in a public and collaborative manner.

– Ability to work collaboratively and change course as needed.

– A culture of constructive criticism and respect.

Preferred Qualifications:

– Experience editing Wikipedia or knowledge of the Wikimedia communities.

– Familiarity with MediaWiki.

– Experience leading teams in web-scale deployments in JavaScript and PHP.
